Nightwear Sizing Guide: How to Find Your Perfect Fit

Nightwear fits differently from daywear, and going by your usual dress size alone is one of the most common reasons a nighty or pajama set ends up too snug at the bust or swimming at the waist. A few extra minutes with a measuring tape saves a return.

Measure yourself, not your old clothes

Take three numbers: bust (around the fullest part), waist (at the natural waistline, not where your jeans sit) and hip (around the fullest part, usually a few inches below the waist). Measure over light clothing, keep the tape snug but not tight, and note all three - nightwear sizing usually runs off this trio rather than a single number.

Know your fabric's stretch

A cotton or cambric cotton piece with little to no stretch should be sized closer to your actual measurements, or slightly looser for sleep comfort. Satin and georgette often have a bit more drape and forgiveness in the cut, so they can feel comfortable even when chosen true to size. Rayon blends tend to fall somewhere in between. When in doubt between two sizes, choose the larger one for a sleep piece - comfort matters more at night than a snug silhouette.

Fit differs by style

A fitted sleep shirt or a bridal gown set is meant to sit closer to the body, so measure carefully and size true. A kaftan or a relaxed nighty is designed with ease built in, so it can often be sized down slightly if you prefer a more tailored drape, or kept true to size for a breezier fit. Two-piece pajama sets are usually most forgiving, since the top and bottoms fit independently.

When you're between sizes

For sleepwear specifically, sizing up is almost always the safer call - a slightly loose nighty or pajama set is comfortable, while a slightly tight one restricts movement through the night. Bridal and occasion pieces are the exception, since they're usually worn for a few hours rather than slept in, so a closer fit is worth prioritising there.
