Nightwear fabrics are chosen for how they feel against the skin, and that same softness means they need a gentler hand than everyday clothing. A little care goes a long way toward keeping a favourite piece in rotation for years rather than months.
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent whenever possible, and avoid wringing - satin especially can lose its sheen and drape if twisted while wet. Gently squeeze out excess water, then lay the piece flat on a clean towel to dry, away from direct sunlight, which can fade colour over time. If you do machine wash, use a mesh laundry bag on a cold, gentle cycle and skip the dryer entirely - air drying is what keeps these fabrics looking finished.
Cotton nightwear is the most forgiving of the fabrics in a nightwear wardrobe and generally handles a machine wash on a cold or warm gentle cycle without issue. Wash similar colours together to avoid dye transfer, especially in the first few washes. Cotton can go in the dryer on low heat, though air drying will help prints and embroidery last longer.
Treat rayon closer to satin than to cotton - it can shrink or lose shape with heat, so a cool hand wash or a gentle cold machine cycle in a mesh bag is safer, followed by flat or hanging air dry.
Iron satin and georgette on a low setting, ideally through a pressing cloth, to avoid scorch marks or unwanted shine. Cotton tolerates a warmer iron directly. For storage, hang gowns and longer pieces where possible to avoid deep creases, and fold pajama sets and nighties in a drawer away from direct sunlight and humidity.
None of this is complicated once it's a habit - it's just a slightly gentler version of ordinary laundry, matched to what each fabric actually needs.
